I know this is a huge favor to ask

Jul 12, 2021

Big warm hello.

I am writing with a huge favor.

Every 2 years Thinkers50 ranks the most important management ideas and their authors.

Showing up in this ranking is a big deal - and for me, it's one key way to get the ideas of reinvention into the hands of millions of people who really need it.

Nominating somebody for Thinkers50 is super easy - you can submit a nomination for can be nominated for both the list itself and a special award.

If reinvention ideas and tools made a difference for you, I'd be incredibly honored if you take as little as 30 seconds, I'm not exaggerating - to nominate me.

Here is the nomination link, and if you might enter my name for the ranking (the field titled "Your Global Ranking Nominee") and also scroll down to type in my name for the "Agility Award" - it's the very first on the list, I'd be incredibly grateful.

I know this is a big ask, but I am learning to ask for help when it really matters. Nobody can build this movement we call...

Why reinvention? Why not innovation?

Jun 14, 2021

There are a lot of questions I get from our reinvention clients, students, practitioners, the press. But there is one question that shows up in nearly every conversation.

"Why reinvention? Why not innovation?"

I have taken a crack at that question in this YouTube video and in this Harvard Business Review article - but both were partial answers.

So, today I want to settle this issue once and for all, (or at least start that process).

Behold, my top 3 reasons why reinvention, not innovation, should rule the day.

#3: Love innovation? Most people are simply not that into it.

A research team at the University of Toronto surveyed 1,000 American and Canadian knowledge workers (all employed and with college degrees) to assess their attitudes towards innovation. In addition to measuring the “drive to innovate,” the scientist looked into things like “grit” and “openness to risk” across two countries and three age...

Overwhelmed? This will help you breathe out.

May 28, 2021

It was exactly one year ago.

The lockdown was in full bloom.
The stress went through the roof.
The crisis management sessions filled my team's calendar.

But somehow, amidst fear and uncertainty and extreme ups-and-downs, we got a dream.

We wanted to put together a set of tools that will make sure this kind of stress will never happen again.

We imagined a way of living and working in which disruption (whether it is COVID-19, a new competitor, a change in technology, an economic crisis, or simply a new boss) would never again catch us off-guard, leaving us tired, hopeless, overwhelmed.

Over 3,000 people helped us deliver this dream to reality.

Practitioners all over the world participated in our research, tested all 9 tools, shared their feedback on visuals, wording, feel.

Over 3,000 people agreed that the title of "Chief Reinvention Officer" is not something you need to get from others - first, you need to claim it for yourself.

"The Chief Reinvenvention...

What would you say to your 20-year-old self?

May 21, 2021

What would you say to your 20-year-old self?

If you had a chance.
Today.
What advice would you give?

A few years ago I had an opportunity to answer this very question in front of thousands of people.

I was given the honor to serve as a graduation speaker at Hartwick College - my own academic home, my alma mater.

This was (by far!) the hardest talk I've ever given in my life. I never prepared this hard. I never felt this much responsibility. I never got this nervous.

But once I remembered myself 20 years earlier, sitting at my own graduation with a cap and gown, filled with anxiety and anticipation, it suddenly got clearer. And calmer. And more focused.

I told my 20-something-year-old self that change is coming faster than I could ever imagine. I shared that only one year after graduation, I would be married. That 3 years after graduation, I would be a mom. That 5 years after graduation, my father-in-law would kill himself.

I spoke about the ups and downs of life...

Why some companies and individuals soar during crisis - while others suffer?

May 14, 2021

I live for a good "underdog" reinvention story, and the story of Miro is definitely one of those.

On January 11, 2020, Chinese media reported the first novel coronavirus death, a sixty-one-year-old man. In the months that followed, the world suffered millions of infections and mourned hundreds of thousands of deaths from what became known as COVID-19.

Suffering struck many organizations, communities, and livelihoods as well. In the United States alone, 30 million people filed for unemployment by May 2020. Century-old companies, passed down for generations, disappeared seemingly overnight. Entire careers vanished.

Yet, as in every global upheaval before, the suffering went hand in hand with courage. Medical professionals worked unimaginable miracles to save the infected. Grocery workers packed food for all to eat. Bus drivers continued to connect the communities. Businesses took on the chaos and fought to make lives a little bit easier or a lot.

I don't know about you, but I love a good podcast on a slow Saturday morning.

So, today I have three episodes for you to choose from - all packed for extra value and insight.

IF YOU WORK IN A CORPORATE SETTING, whether for-profit, non-profit, or any other organization, or are currently between jobs, this episode is all about professional reinvention.

We talk about the trends disrupting the future of work, simple tools to help you transition in this pandemic economy, and much more:

IF YOU ARE A CONSULTANT, TRAINER, OR COACH, this just-released episode on how we grew our business by 477% in 2020 is the right fit for you.

Here, I wanted to be very specific on which trends are disrupting the consulting industry right now - and how to use these trends, rather than be their victim. Yes, it is incredibly lonely.

Apr 30, 2021

I don't know about your experience with reinvention, but for me, it has always been an incredibly draining job.

You get tired of non-stop firefighting.

You can't ever seem to get buy-in from your peers, bosses, or clients, who all have their own agenda.

You keep struggling to get traction with changing your organization - or that of your clients - for the better.

And through it all, you feel completely and utterly alone.

That was me for a long long time.

Until I decided that I absolutely must build a community of reinvention practitioners so that we all have a place to go to when we feel tired or confused; when we need to pick somebody's brain and find a new hack; or when we simply have something to celebrate - and want to be with people who understand a hard-won battle.

At first, my reinvention family was an informal, private affair.

But the further we went, the more clear it became how needed and amazingly powerful (as professionals...

Reinvention in my grocery store?

Apr 23, 2021

I love love love finding a good reinvention story. I hunt for them everywhere: in books, articles, at professional conferences. I roam social media searching for them with the tenacity of Indiana Jones in pursuit of ancient treasures.

So, imagine how excited I was to find a reinvention story in a grocery aisle while shopping for toothpaste.

Behold, a reinvented deodorant!

Here's what's new: traditional deodorants are packaged in single-use plastic, which goes to the trash at the end of use.

The new reinvented deodorant comes with a stainless steel case, which you can use your entire life with different refills - the refills are packaged in recycled plastic.

Essentially, this turns your deodorant into a subscription - increasing consumer loyalty while offering new value to the consumers looking to limit their ecological footprint.

This kind of plus-plus solution is exactly what makes for a...

Taking a shower 🛁

Apr 16, 2021

I get tons of questions about business and reinvention, but one of them is surely the most frequent.

"How often should I reinvent?"

Here's my answer. Reinvention is like taking a shower.

If I don't take a shower on a regular basis, I begin to stink. The same applies to our products, processes, leadership practices, and business models. And the same for our careers and competencies: if we don't reinvent on a regular basis, we begin to stink.

So, how do we take a metaphorical shower? How can we reinvent regularly - before we are forced to do so by COVID-19, new competitors, new bosses, new regulations, new customer expectations.

Here are my three secrets to making reinvention a habit.

Secret #1: Allocate specific "protected" time to reinvent

You know the drill: if it's not on our calendar as a "I am not canceling this," or a must-have, it will simply not get done. We have to put things on a calendar, we have to...
